Will I Reach The Summit?

Right about 20 days from now, I would be going to the most adventurous trip of my life, the trip which I dubbed as the toughest journey of all because it requires strength, determination and strong heart. I’ve been questioning myself over and over again. I have so many worries. The main question would remain on my head until I can proof that I could do it. Will I be able to reach the peak famously known as Low’s Peak?

I’m climbing Mount Kinabalu! Auwwwwwwwwwww!

I’m in no greater shape 10 days or 20 days ago compared to today. I’ve trained walking up and down the stairs for like 1.5 hours only. Aiyoyoooo… Does walking up and down the stairs every time you want to go to the office’s restroom count? What’s more with my current back pain problem, I’ve stopped training for fear the pain might get worst. OUCH!!! Then there’s the horrible nightmare question: Would my boss approve my leave? I’m kinda busy during that time.

Che-Cheh timidly shouted: “Wait I don’t care! I want to go no matter what!”

Mo-C, plz plz plz support me.

Then I’m worry that my Beach Crocs would not be suitable for this kind of climbing (slippery?). Do I need to bring another shoe? Altitude sickness leh… scary! Would my stuff be able to fit into one large tiny 38 litre bagpack? worry worry worry. Then there’s the toilet question. Seriously man. Every since I was caught in the most horrid traffic jam along the way to Bangkok International Airport… controlling my so called ahem ‘urine’… aiseh I’ve been having REAL nightmare on congested roads right here in the KLANG VALLEY.

I shouldn’t stress myself like that hor. What’s a holiday if it’s a stressing one.

My friend, do you have any good advice for me?

all i can say is good to luck to you… haha no, seriously, u must be absolutely fit & wear proper shoes with good grip & when climbing down wear sandals or else u might get black toes & i’m sure the guides will tell u not to joke too loudly with yr friends cos the spirits might be disturbed & ‘rasuk’ you. oh & bring along a walking stick cos u might nd it when yr legs about to give out.

I thought you are climbing Everest … but then well … Ahoy Che Cheh!

Go Go Che-Cheh. ‘Jia-Yau’ ok.

Just hire a porter and relax. Bring a walking stick along if you like πŸ˜‰ Help save your energy

On second though… Gallivanter’s suggestion of travelling half-way point on a helicopter sounds like a great idea too – considering your poor aching back.

Buy chocolates. The minty kind would be good. You can buy them along with some beer or alcohol at Labuan prior to your climb. Bread&buns tired me out he last time I climbed and needs digestion.

When you reach the Laban Rata lodge, bless you! The hardest part is over, assuming you went thru Mesilau route which is much more arduous yet beautiful scenery compared to the other muddy route.
Bring lotsa money and eat scrumptious meals. I recommend pai kuat wong or cantonese fried mee. Bring lotsa milo 3in1. That helps.

The journey from there starts at 2am in attempt to reach before sunset. Good luck.

If somehow you managed to reach the top in time for sunrise(heck I was the 3rd of my group to reach and I was only in time to catch it), you’d have to endure the cold cold winds which is stronger if it doesnt rains.
Now take this in, the worst part for some people are the long descent, which takes a toll on your knees.
A quick soak in the Poring Hotsprings should do the trick of relaxing your sore bones.

and pls don’t worry about the work, I’m still here, OK!!
You’ve supported me many many times, now it’s time for me to pay back :battlingeyelashes:

Bring real hiking shoes, please. You’ll need grip and plenty of traction, so forget em crocs.

I’m pretty sure you’ll end up at the top. Go for it !!!

Sunrise at the peak is around 5.30am. Croc shoes is fine in addition to normal grippy shoes. Altitude sickness hell yeah my head was pounding from the cold winds.

Wah che-cheh, finally you wanna go to Mount Kinabalu? :daydream: Thought mother che-cheh never let you go le.

Kipas once blew that sport shoes are not suitable for climbing. They say perhaps wearing sandals with socks are better. What do you think?

  • Reply Che-Cheh March 5, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Saoirse, I managed to persuade her.
Well, some say like that too. Maybe during the descending part wearing sandals is more suitable. Ahh not sure but I really hope I can just wear my Crocs although most of you have told me to go with a good shoe.
