Yeah! My blog has restored to its condition prior to upgrading. Categories and blogroll ok liao. Thanks Bryan!
I did a bit of googling on WP2.6 problem. Found out it’s not my theme being incompatible. WP2.6 has some serious problem! For most cases, categories and blogroll will disappear after upgrading. And for some cases like myself whereby I’m using index.php permalinks, all single post will go missing.
So right now I won’t be doing any tweaking. Wait for another new release.
And remember don’t upgrade to WP2.6 ya! WP2.6 failed!
p/s: So far there are 2 ways that I know that you can mend the missing categories problem. It involves going into your database and PHPMyAdmin. But why bother hor.
AND Sorry my friends all the comments for this post and some comments for durian fever! post had gone missing due to blog restoration.
Aiseh man. WP2.6 failed on this blog! Categories, posts and comments all went missing. So I revert back to old version. And I found all my categories has gone from the old version too!!! WAHLAU EH!!! I have 650+ post leh. Anyone have this similar case? I suspect this theme is not compatible with WP2.6.
To make matter worst I couldn’t login to my WP after reverting it back. Luckily everything is fine now and that’s why I can write this post. Hahaha
Now I need to make a test blog and test this theme on it with WP2.6. I won’t be blogging often until it is resolved. It’s better to upgrade to a newer version lor I think. If later I upgrade, mana tau more problem eh. If this theme fail then I will be looking on a new theme. I don’t want leh. Susah payah I edit it until become what you all see it now.
Ok I think I’ve get it out of my system liao. Now back to tweaking!
Upgrading to WordPress 2.6 in progress…

Fortunately you backup your files.
So, let’s wait for WP2.7 perhaps!
I upgrade it to 2.6 and it works fine, luckily my theme works and everything is going smoothly now.
It looks okay to me… :nerd:
Of course you have problems upgrading to WordPress 2.6. You’re currently running WordPress 2.2.1. They changed the entire category system and database during version 2.3.
Also I would STRONGLY advise you to update your WordPress to the latest version if possible for two reasons. One is that older versions of WordPress has a lot of known security issues which means your blog is a hack waiting to happen. Second, due to security issues, search engines like Google are less likely to index your blog in order to counter spam that might arise if your blog is hacked because of the security issues.
It’s quite easy to change the blogrolls and categories to the new format anyway. Though after 2.3 you might want to take a look at any plugin issues that you have as well. I can help if you like.
wow.. thanks.. I was going to upgrade to WP2.6 this weekend. Might delay this now till I’m certain everything is sorted out. regards, Jeff.
MonkeyWong, ya let’s wait first.
JustinKC, if your blog is previously version 2.3 or up it should have no problem upgrading to WP2.6.
Hcfoo, coz now I use old version back.
Edrei, unfortunately this blog uses index.php permalinks which WP2.6 has problem with it. If I upgrade this blog to WP2.3 will the categories n blogroll issue arises?
Jeff, hi if your blog is currently running WP2.3 or above it should have no problem (that’s what I read from others) when you upgrade to 2.6. Unless you’re using index.php permalinks like me.
Yes it will, it is from version 2.3 onwards that the categories have changed. You have to do something about it regardless, which is still pretty easy. It’s just changing the category/links hook on your theme. Nothing to it.
The index.php permalinks isn’t a problem as well. You just have to update your permalinks to something more suitable. If you’re worried about older posts pointing to the wrong permalink, you can try this plugin which redirects old permalinks to a new one without needed to change anything.
So what you do is to change your old permalinks to a new one without the index.php. Then use the plugin to point all links with the index.php to the new permalinks. Then upgrade your WordPress alongside your categories. Hopefully that should help you.
So my decision to wait is the right one?
Luckily you backed up all your files ya!
p/s: Many thanks for the birthday wishes, I really appreciate that.
The answer is 29, young hor. HAHAHA. :clown:
Edrei, then it’s better to WP2.6 straight away. Thanks for the permalinks recommendation. How do I change the category/links hook on my theme? Which file to change? Thank You!!! :kowtow:
CC, what’s your current WP version? No matter what we should test it out first before officially changing it.
You’re welcome dear.
Thanks for the info. I won’t upgrade as for now.
It’s not a file. It’s just a PHP code. I’m not sure what tag you have to call your links. But for your blogroll, the one you should change to is wp_list_bookmarks. I’ve linked the codex so you know how to use it properly.
Because WordPress also changes your category number as well. As soon as you upgrade, make sure you check what your category ID number is so that you can call it out on your list. If this gets too confusing, you can send me a mail or IM me at derevon at hotmail dot com. We’ll see what we can do from there.
Jam, welcome.
Edrei, alright. I’ll make a trial run first. Any problem will contact you. Thanks!!! :star:
I really don’t bother keeping up with the upgrade already. It’s been about a year (I think) since I updated. LOL. As long as it still works.
I’m using 2.5.1 now.
Narrowband, just that my hands are itchy now. And for security reason.
CC, I heard 2.5.1 has some security issue. Not sure about the content.
