First thing first, a very Happy New Year 2013 to my dear friends and readers.
Now a little something from the 2012 KBS Drama Awards and SBS Drama Awards.
Am so happy that Yeon Woo Jin and Yoo Da In won the One-Act Special Award for their roles in my favorite Korean drama special; Just An Ordinary Love Story. I was yelling “YES!!!” when their names were announced.
Also happy for Uhm Tae Woong for winning the Excellence Awards for his wonderful portrayal as Kim Seon Woo in Man From The Equator. What’s more cool is that he won another prize which is Actor of the Year (awarded by PDs from all three broadcasters). He’s the best actor in my book amongst the dramas I watched in 2012.
Now to the main topic of this post. He who knows shame…
Another happy day for me as Lee Min Ho won the Top Excellence Award, Miniseries for Faith and Top 10 Stars award (though I think this award is plain stupid). So yes I was feeling great on the last day of 2012 and the beginning of 2013. Then I saw his acceptance speech for the Top Excellence Award which has been subbed into English… ahh no wonder this boy was showing sadness during his speech.
Another version of his speech in writing…
Lee Min Ho’s speech:
First of all, I am really honored to be selected as one of the candidates amongst all the outstanding sunbae whom I respected. At the same time, I feel ashamed winning the award this time. Last year, I won the same award; but I feel especially ashamed this year. There were lots of gossips & rumors about this drama ‘The Great Doctor’ even before it started filming. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude towards the people who helped to complete this drama. In addition, this year’s summer was the toughest, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to all the staff & actors. Last year when I was on this stage, I said I hope that in my next project, it would be the whole team instead of myself alone rewarding. It cannot be realised this year, I feel sorry and it’s a bit pity. Every actor in The Great Doctor, I miss you. Hope that we could gather together in this new year, forget everything and have a drink. For all the local & overseas fans who always support and love me, you really grant me a lot of positive energy every time when we meet. Whenever I see your gaze, I feel more responsibility on me. I will be committed to return your love with better projects. Thank you, I love you all

After that video, I feel a lump in my throat. This is one of a kind and rare speech. One that is honest and humble from a man who knows shame. For the words he uttered “I feel ashamed winning the award this time…” remind me of the time when Choi Young told Lee Jae Hyun in episode 11 of Faith why he chooses to serve Gongmin as his king… because King Gongmin knows what shame is.
Poor boy. You earned that award. You really did. You brought Choi Young to life and Faith became my no. 1 favorite Korean drama of all time because of the whole Faith team and your effort. 힘내. 그리고 축하 해요.
And because of this speech… Dear 이민호, this noona will be your 평생 팬.
To “have shame” means to maintain a sense of restraint against offending others (as with modesty, humility, and deference) while to “have no shame” is to behave without such restraint (as with excessive pride or hubris) – from Wikipedia
This is the question asked by Jeong Ryeo Won to Lee Min Ho during the Top 10 Stars award. Thanks to Semilla for translating what he said:
“You’ve been acting with actresses who are older than you. Rumor has it that it’s partly because you act cute. What rating would you give yourself out of a hundred for tour cuteness?” So LMH was speechless at first, and then he was like, “let me ask you this, where did you hear that?” And JRY said, “I don’t know. This was the question written by the writers.” So LMH said, “I suppose 50.”
