I’m a bokeh addict. My love for bokeh exist long before I even think of getting a DSLR.
What is bokeh? Bokeh are the out of focus areas in a picture. They’re real treat to the eyes. Blur, soft & mellowy… making the focus only area jump out of the picture (shallow depth of field).
Like this…
What has bokeh got to do with the 50mm lens? Well, the 50mm (f/1.4 or f/1.8) are the most loved lens by bokeh fanatics as they produce the loveliest sharpness & bokeh!
I bought my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D lens 1 day shy of my DSLR 7th months anniversary.
The first picture I took from the new 50mm lens is my current kit lens.
My what a treasure I’ve found!!! I’m so in love with this lens baby!
As I was sitting in the shop trying out the new lens, my heart call out for the f/1.4 which retails at around RM1k~RM1.8k. I can get the f/1.4D at RM1k. But after much thought I choose the f/1.8D instead which I bought at RM400. See? Different by RM600. I choose to save the money now and buy a better zoom lens with fast f/2.8 aperture later. Kekeke (mimpi aje…few ‘k’s ohh) I decided not to try the f/1.4 lens fearing I will change my heart. Haha Besides many people said f/1.8 is good enough.
The 50mm f/1.8 is known as standard prime lens. Its wide aperture allows me to shoot in low light condition (stand aside kit lens!). Being a ‘clueless’ person I’d finally figured out why my kit lens won’t produce the sharpness that I want and it fails me many times in low light. Grrrr. With the f/1.8, I can now shoot Chester and my food picture with great satisfaction.
The fur behind his ear is the softest. Ahhh nice…
Charcoal bamboo bread anyone? I’ve never seen a black color bread before so I bought a loaf and try it. Taste is sweet. From Tong Kee.
Another ‘ulu’ thing I want to share is prior to purchasing this lens, I’ve never change a lens before. Now? I’m a pro liao. I didn’t take off the 50mm lens for 3 weeks. But I finally took it off because I need my kit lens for some other reason.
All in all 50mm f/1.8D is the lens to go if you’re a bokeh lover. It’s especially for those who want a cheap but good performance fast prime lens. And this lens is very light too!

Ahhhh, only with a DSLR. For now, I will keep coming to your site to enjoy the pics. P&S no bokeh effect!
As low as the aperture goes, the depth of field decreases, but not all lenses give a creamy bokeh with love aperture really… one good example is the infamous Minolta f.4 beercan lens. Even at f.4 it gives one of the creamiest and gorgeous backgrounds I’ve seen compared to the typical 50mm f1.2 or 1.4… If you ever get a chance, test it out!!!! π
Dawn, meaning if you get a DSLR liao you won’t come to my blog? Haha just joking.
Lex, wooo then I must test it out if I ever have that chance.
Beautiful shot! I wanna have DSLR too! So that I can toy around with bokeh effect! I wonder when I can own a DSLR! π
If you think 50/1.8 is good, try your hands on the 85/1.4. Its godly :suprised: :suprised: :kaching:
But bokeh is so overrated. π
You got the lens for RM400? That’s somewhat expensive…
Canon’s 50mm f1.8 sells for around RM300.
Tekkaus, have you heard of credit card?
Shivan, at RM4k… slit my throat. Haha
Jason, nah nah no no
Khengsiong, I called up a few shops all also quoted me RM400. I think Canon’s 50mm f/1.8 is cheaper.
Che-Cheh, if I get a DSLR, I will keep coming to your blog to get tips lah coz rookie mah….by then you a pro already, have to call you sifu then! π
Dawn, Who knows you’re better than me. Hehe
yr photography skills r improving. i think it is not really necessarily yr new euipment. u r just getting better in terms of skills
im yearning for a dslr!!!! :silly:
Nice bokeh pictures! I should go to grab myself one of those lens!
Beng, really? hehe thanks for the compliment. Still need to improve a lot.
Annant, can ask mommy to buy for you lo since you’re still studying.
Jam, yes go get one ya. You will love it.
Bokeh is macro?
I really like those pictures u took on Chester.. The hair so so smooth and nice….
Keeyit, Bokeh is not macro. Bokeh is the blurry part you see in the background. Sometimes his hair is kind rough. But behind his ear… it’s always soft. π
good job che-cheh trying to poison readers ;p ;p ;p
Good choice!!! 50mm lens is a worthwhile investment.
I’m looking forward to getting my walkabout lens (17-205mm or 18-250mm) but it will cost me a bomb! I’ll have to invest in an ND filter as well.
Narrowband, hahaha poison with what?
Angie Tan, gulp… ya coz a bomb!!!! I will have to wait longer to simpan duit haha
love bokeh effect too… also got the same lens in mid 2009…. loving it esp for child portraits. but sometimes for event photography to capture the ambience & ppl i think the 35mm f1.8 is a better range. temptation temptation
Lechua, hi! this lens though is fast is a bit tight. I’ve not have a look at 35mm. I know Cecil owns and recommends it. I would love to have a wide angle lens. I’m dreaming of a wide angle lens but too bad no budget. Haha
