… like Chester. A dog that opens door for his master!

“Chester, open the door!”

“Chak! I found you!”

Isn’t his master clever? Weh…I train Chester to understand this command wor. Of course my dog must be clever too or else he won’t know what the hell I’m talking about.

This bright doggy uses his cute black nose to push door (doors that are not completely shut). I don’t plan to teach him to open our door using door handle. Who knows he simply open for stranger leh. Neither am I teaching him to open our fridge!

At first when he started to learn how to do it while being under my command, he would only open the store room door that housed his food. Later on when he became braver, he started to open our study room door then the front door and then the two front gates. Proud of you, Che.

I’ve always wanted to teach him the ’open door’ command because it’s a super cool trick. I’ve seen dogs on TV do it. So why can’t my dog eh? I tried teaching him this command once a long time ago but was unsuccessful then. So how did I teach him the ‘open door’ command now? Then and now… I still use the same way of teaching. Maybe he didn’t get it the first time.

I learnt this ‘mantra’ from a dog training website a long time ago. Long before Chester come and live with us. It’s very simple. Chester has been opening our store room door for as long as I can remember (coz that’s where his food and cookies are kept) - to take a peak at his food/cookies treasure lo. The different is now he understands my command. How do I make him understand me? Every time when he does that action, I would tell him “Chester, open the door. Good boy!”. He’ll get use to hearing this command and would eventually understand what it means.

Same like other tricks/commands eg. sit, stand, run, lie down, bow, jump, bark(speak), etc. Your dog knows how all this is done. Its just that they don’t understand that the action sit is called “sit”. Ahh that’s where we come in as their teacher to guide them. As for special tricks such as shake hand, high 5… that you gotta guide them, execute the action together and let them hear the command. Do you know that we can save our dog’s life just by teaching them these few simple commands? Think about it and let me know why.

Chester might have flunk his obedience class (not flunk la, he can’t concentrate in the class… so he dropped out) but I didn’t just stop there. I teach him all the basic commands and the far-fetched ones as well.

Should I quit my job as an engineer one day, I could become a temporary dog trainer. I think I understand dogs. Here doggy doggy…mushhy mushhy WOOF WOOF!
