Makro Becomes Tesco Extra

Makro Cash & CarryRemember Makro Cash & Carry? Makro is the first hypermarket in Malaysia. Unfortunately not all people ‘are welcome’ there because Makro business is targeted at small businesses, retailers, wholesalers and caterers. Don’t worry, nowadays everyone can shop at Makro.

I remembered when Makro was first opened in 1993 at Shah Alam, a majority of Klang Valley population became ‘Makro crazy’. Yes even my mom! You need to have a Makro Trade Card to gain entrance and for purchasing goods. So for those who don’t have a Trade Card, they can only sulk in jealousy. Hehehe… A Trade Card is given free of charge to retailers, caterers, service providers, offices, etc. At that time, one Trade card can only admit 2 person (if I’m not mistaken) and children below 12 years of age cannot enter the hypermarket (again if I’m not mistaken). So you’ll always see lots of children and single parents waiting outside the cashier area.

Tesco ExtraEventually the ‘Makro craze’ died down when the first Giant Hypermarket was established in Shah Alam or was it USJ? in 1993. I’ve not been to Makro for like ages and I got a shock when I visited them recently. Why? Because Makro would/has become/became Tesco Extra. Tesco has bought over Makro earlier this year and the Seremban Makro hypermarket was the first of the Makro branches to opens its door as Tesco Extra not too long ago. Tesco Extra would be selling goods in bulk too.

The Makro Shah Alam was closed for renovation starting yesterday and you can expect new things to come for Tesco Extra Shah Alam.

Here’s to more shopping. Cheers!!! party

The first giant hypermarket is in Shah Alam…but Giant has been around for ages as Teng Minimart…the owner sold off Giant to Cold Storage, bought himself one old hotel in JB and convert it to a more profitable business to retire with… :)
