Ever heard of Rubik’s Cube? or does Magic Cube ring any bell?
This is a Rubik’s Cube. It was originally called as Magic Cube by its inventor Ernő Rubik.
Still don’t know what the hell this is? This is the world’s best-selling toy invented in the 80s. A total of 300,000,000 Rubik’s Cube had been sold worldwide.
Each side of the cube are covered with 9 stickers in six solid colors. The objective of the game is to cover each face of the cube with one solid color. Sound simple? Hehe you gotta try it to know it.
What brings me to write about this cube? Will Smith.
Yeah this guy can REALLY solve the cube puzzle given only a few minutes. I’m in awe. I was watching The Pursuit of Happyness the other day and then I saw him again in Oprah and there he is again with Rubik’s Cube.
I used to own a 3×3x3 Rubik’s Cube in the 80s (of course!). Everyone I know had one in their home. I was a small kid but I managed to solve the puzzle a few times (maybe twice or thrice). Ahem ahem… but before I was successful I’ve tried ripping open the cube (failed!) and removing the cube’s color sticker that I couldn’t solve and replace with the correct one… hehe. Yes I know sneaky.
Well I remember chucking my torn and bruised Rubik’s Cube away. And this is one of the things that I regretted throwing away.

It takes me about a minute to solve a standard 3×3x3 cube. About a hour to work through a 4×4x4 cube and a 5×5x5 cube. 4×4x4 cubes are harder than 5×5x5 cubes cause they need a different formula to solve it. What really is cool was the Sudoku cube I recently bought. I made a mistake of messing it up before looking at it and it took me a week to solve it. I think there was a video of me somewhere on the net of me solving the Rubiks cube in about 2 minutes. It was in one of the blog meets. I can tell you one thing. It’s definitely a party piece to have it. :)

Yea, I heard there are formulas to solve it. Tried google it last time but didn’t manage to find it.

i have no patience with the rubik cube. i used to have the original rubik cube when i was much younger but it hilang entah ke mana. and then i bought a cheap china-made rubik cube, those with pokemon and mickey mouse stickers and it fell into pieces after a few twists. sigh.

I practised on fake ones. Some of them are actually quite good if you’re lucky enough to land your hands on them. I collect rubiks cubes now anyway so I keep the novelty ones and play the good ones. The catch is that the original rubiks cube can have the colours wearing out quite easily even if they are very smooth to turn. Mine’s worn down to it’s almost all white, and at that time it was barely a year old.

As far as I know, they don’t sell it in Malaysia. You got to get your friends from out of town to get them for you, especially the special edition ones.

I learn it during my primary school time, can solve it within 2 minutes, until now, still can make it within 3 minutes. Already engraved in my brain,but hard to find anyone who is interesting to learn.

Haha ,practice make perfect,also when you practise more you will start to create your own formula/shortcut and important is you have to use the original Rubik’s cube which can stand the fast twisting without problem. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071007/od_afp/hungarygameleisureoffbeat_071007210721 But when i knew the world championship record is 12.46 seconds(link above), really felt amazing ,how can they make it?

I remember Toy’Rus is selling the original Rubik’s cube, may be it still have stock, i am thinking of buying a new one, as my existing one already 26 years old, can not twist smoothly. I don’t know hwether it still come with formula sheet, it kis easy to start will the standard formula.
