“I decided,” the 25-year-old Belgian said, “to stop fooling myself and accept it.”
“I always based everything on this motivation — this flame — that was in me. And once I lost that, I lost many, many things,” Henin said.

The world no. 1 announced her retirement on Wednesday together with her coach, Carlos Rodriguez.

I’m saddened by this news. There will be no farewell tour or last tournament whatsoever. Henin retires with immediate effect. Her recent 2008 slump in tennis; losing 6-4, 6-0 to Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open, 6-2, 6-0 to Serena Williams at the Sony Ericsson Open in April and just this past week losing to Dinara Safina 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the German Open…well we should have see that coming.
Where she lacks in size, her enormous fighting spirit make up for it. I’ve seen her play when she just started out and I knew from there on she is going to be one hell of a great tennis player. The proof? Her 7 Grand Slam titles (4 from French Open, 2 from US Open and 1 from Australian open). Yup Wimbledon is the only title not in her bag.
She’s the only reason I tune in to women tennis in the first place.
As for her future, she will be concentrating on charity and her tennis school.
I wish Justine all the best.

It’s rather sad for me to see her retire at 25 yo. Perhaps the failed marriage affected her.
