My mom bought a bottle of fish sauce a year ago and left it in the kitchen shelf.

Every time I go into the kitchen the fish sauce will be staring back at me. It’s like saying “You can’t touch me coz you don’t know how to use me!”. Very intimidating aiyoo!
After much thinking, I decided to try using this sauce for my cooking. Aiyo I must tell you… my cooking suddenly taste a lot better leh. Hahaha! I no longer use salt and soy sauce. Fish sauce is all I need.
Fish sauce is a main condiment use mostly in Vietnamese and Thai cooking. It is made from anchovies, salt and sugar.
I asked my mom yesterday why she bought the fish sauce. Her answer: Beh ki liau loh (can’t remember)

Xin, hi my dad said correct. Fish sauce is yu lu.
CC and Yozoranitesky, let’s try it then. If you smell the bottle it’s a bit disgusting but no worry there. Hehe.

if you’re a fan of sauce, i recommend you try the Stew Sauce from Cosway. Damn good. I use it to fry my veggies (with a little Chinese cooking wine), and it smells exactly like the veggies cooked in the restaurant. Also ha, the stew sauce can be used to steam fish. Don’t need kicap or salt anymore. Just a few spoons of the sauce would do. So easy. It can also mask the fishy smell of the fish (previously I used to rub a little salt over the fish to do that).

I learned about fish sauce from the Hmongs and Vietnames when I first came here. I use it for my cooking too but always discreetly becoz of the gwailo in the house, but once he eats the dish, no complains.

Nope not at all. It does smell “fishy” when you are cooking it tho, strong to those who are not used to the smell.
