Gardening Update: Vegetables & Fruits Grown From Kitchen Scraps

Here’s an update on my vegetables & fruits about 3 months later. They were grown from seeds obtained from kitchen scraps. Enjoy!

Capsicum Plant
My capsicum plants transferred outside to get 8 hours of sun around end of July.

Capsicum Plant
This was them in early September. They’ve grown taller than the rosemary.

Capsicum Plant
I’ve seen lots of flowering but none turned into fruits. *sobs Okay I know they seriously need fertilizer right?

Capsicum Plant
But then just this morning I found these gems. Oh God so happyyyyyyy! There’s one at the lower left corner of this photo as well.

Lemon & Tomato Plant
Here are my lemon and tomato plant around end of July.

Lemon Plant
Mr. Lemon tree in early September.

Lemon Plant
And here’s Mr. Lemon some 10 days later… growing rapidly taller. It’s now higher than the tomato plant beside it. I’ve uprooted the tomato plant today. Grow well Mr Lemon tree.

Lemon Plant
The best discovery about this lemon tree is finding out how aromatic the leaf is. I love to tear the leaf and smell the wonderful fragrance. It’s nothing I’ve smelled before. Very very unique. Hmmm how should I describe it? It doesn’t remind you of lemon but it has that distinct citrusy aroma. The smell that calm my soul!

Can’t wait for my lemon tree to bear fruits!!! *fingers crossed

Update: April 2017
Lemon Tree
Here’s my lemon tree about a year later. I replanted it to a larger pot and moved to the back of my house together with my avocado tree. πŸ™‚

Tomato Plant
This is the tomato plant beside my lemon tree with couples of tomatoes back in Aug (end).

Tomato Plant
This is them 8 days later (left photo) and early September (right photo). Out of these three tomatoes, two had split marks on the body.

Tomato Plant
Turning red! (from couple of days back)

Tomato Plant
So proud of myself. Hehe

Tomato Plant
Size comparison between my homegrown tomato (just one; on the right) and store-bought cherry tomatoes. Yup yup it’s so tiny. Don’t laugh la.

I ate it today. Guess what? It’s sweeter than commercially grown/store-bought tomatoes. No wonder homegrown food is DA BEST!!! Now I understand it.

Cherry Tomato Plant
Here’s my flowering cherry tomato plant from early September.

Cherry Tomato Plant
I have about 10 baby cherry tomatoes now. Waiting patiently for them to turn red/yellow (not sure about the color because I have both seeds mixed up ~ me blur as usual haha).

Date Plant
Can you guess what the two long slim plants are?

Date Plant
Here’s another clue…

No idea?

They’re date palm. You know the date that we find abundance during puasa and Raya time? Yup that date (kurma). I won’t go into really growing them because they’re REALLY large plant. It’s just an experiment to see whether they can grow via seeds and I got my answer. Hehe

Btw, the turmeric plant in the first photo of this post didn’t survived. No idea why.

Spring Onions
I have three pots of these spring onions. I think I finally found the secret to how NOT to make your spring onions die. Haha. Before this I always sow the onions into the soil. This time I simply place the onions on the soil. Without the soil covering the onions, the onions won’t turn soggy (make sure it’s not place in very shady area). I use onions and shallots. Both gave me spring onions. To harvest them, just snip the quantity you need and they will continue to grow from where they’re snipped off. Cool!

Sage
Sage grown from store-bought seeds. I love to use them to make sage honey tea and sage omelette.

Lastly, I decided to experiment on another favorite fruit of mine and I was surprised that they actually germinated. Now, why didn’t I do that sooner?

Baby Fig Plants
I’m talking about these babies. You know what these are? Figs!!! Wohoooooooooo

One is germinated from fresh fig seeds (dried for a couple of days) and another is germinated from seeds of dried fig. I already forgot which is which. LOL. Not important. What’s important is BOTH are producing me lots of baby figs. 😍 Will write out a separate post if these figs survive just like how my avocado plants are growing healthier and taller. Tsk, click here to read how to grow figs from seeds in Malaysia.

Unknowingly, I am slowly working towards my ultimate dream… to have a beautiful farm in the land of NZ (It can be any country actually). All I want is a plot for my veggies, some cows, horses, sheep, chicken, cats and DOGS!!! Yes, I would like to give those homeless dogs and cats another chance at life.

I don’t know how I’m going to reach my goal but I think what I’m doing now will eventually lead me to it. Just enjoy the journey along the way!

Wow I’m very impressed with all the plants you’ve managed to grow! All my plants keep dying haha.

    Quick questions:
    1. Do you do any research on the plant such as optimum soil/water/sunlight?
    2. How much time per day will you need to upkeep the plants?

Hi Adino, Thank you very much. That’s a nice compliment. πŸ™‚ The most important thing I’ve learned is you need to give them full sun. It’s their energy source. Second is water and then fertilizer. Of course some thrive in shady area which is good too.
      My answers:
      1. Usually I don’t research or just do minimal research like can they survive in tropical country? LOL If the plant kept on dying, then only I find out the amount of water/sunlight it needs. I treat all plants the same, I mean, I give them the same soil (organic/black/poo-rich soils), same amount of water (if the pot is smaller, than less water), same fertilizer.
      2. Only once per day. I usually water the plants in the morning and do some weed pulling if I see ’em and also remove dead leaves. That’s it. On the weekend (not every weekend, occasion weekend), I will spend more time, like loosen up the soil and do some plants transferring and feed ’em organic fertilizer about 2-3 weeks once.

Also I sometimes talk to my plants. Haha Just say grow big and strong ya/ you’re so beautiful or just smile with your heart. The plants will know. πŸ˜‰

Despite the improvement you see here, I still failed at growing mint/thyme/oregano for example. So don’t give up. Coz I’m not giving up.

Way to go, girl! The plants are thriving beautifully. I, too, was told to talk to the plants, and the plants will respond to how much love you put on them πŸ™‚ And you have awesome green thumbs!

      Hi Dawn, Thank you πŸ™‚
I don’t always have green thumbs. It took many failures before getting them to grow just the way they are. Still there are plants that I keep murdering (eg dill, thyme, oregano, mint). LOL

Hi Che-Che, so impressive. can’t you advice me where or how to go about starting a home-sized (corner house) mini farm? It’s actually for my parents.

Hi Jennifer, thank you. πŸ™‚ I’m just doing trial and error every day.
Maybe you can start by asking your parents what kind of vegetables or fruit trees they would like to grow and eat. From there, you can save seeds and kitchen scraps, and sow/plant them in the garden. Gardening don’t have to be expensive. πŸ˜‰
