Chinese Opera @ Kuan Yin Temple, Klang

I visited the famous Kuan Yin Temple in Klang on Wesak Day 3 months ago. Guess what? Last Saturday, I visit Kuan Yin Teng again but this time it was night time. As Kuan Yin’s birthday is on Sunday, we decided to go have a ‘look-look’ the night before because we saw quite a handful of people there plus a large tent has been erected for (I guess) opera!

I’ve been to this Kuan Yin Temple to watch Chinese Opera when I was small. But then I really can’t remember anything at all. So when we arrived there and saw that a Chinese Opera show were about to start, I was damn excited. It’s been my dream to watch Chinese Opera in Malaysia. I’ve seen them in Beijing but it’s a different feeling when you can watch it from your own backyard.

Without further ado, let me show you some of the shots I took.

At night in the temple compound.

This is the original 100+ years old Kuan Yin Temple. It has been given a face lift; new paint coats but the interior is still undergoing construction. This old temple is situated right beside the new one. Lovely ya?

Lotus candles in the cabinet.

People are sitting there watching Chinese Opera in conjunction with Kuan Yin’s birthday.

And the Opera show begins…

I like this white outfit.

And this orange one too.

Warriors? The costumes are so colorful yeah?

Going round and round. Hmm

What a lovely lady!

These dancers are as graceful as a swan.

Well what do you know? They have wheels!

See the long rods they’re holding? Means they are riding on horses. And the flags stuck behind their back means the number of wars they’ve won. Source is from my mom & grandma. Unfortunately I don’t understand a word they’re singing. Too bad lo.

This Chinese Opera troupe is from Thailand. Not that they sing in Thai. Haha

Later on, the whole troupe came down the stage and walks towards the temple.

And pray to the Kuan Yin God.

Silhouette. Love this shot.

A glimpse at one of the Chinese Opera singer.

That’s all for now. To be continued… where one of my childhood & life-long dream was fulfilled. πŸ™‚ *still pinching my cheeks*

Amazing night shots! Can’t believe those troupe are from Thailand. Did I miss something? Did you use fast lense for those incredibly sharp night scenes?

I didn’t know they still perform Chinese Opera in Malaysia! Love those photos! πŸ™‚

Dawn, need special software to make HDR. I’m gonna try cari from torrent. Hehe

Cecil, Thank You! Ya me can’t believe either they’re from Thailand. Thought they’re from China/Taiwan. Me using kit lens only. I change the ISO to 1000, 1250 and at times 1600. But I think the real reason for these sharp scenes is because the stage is brightly lit (while the background is dark). Luckily no noise.

Foongpc, well now you know πŸ™‚ To ceh.

Thai doing Chinese opera? Amazing ya! I guess the opera was conducted in Teochew dialect, am I right?

Jam, I don’t know how to distinguish Teochew dialect. I think it has something like mandarin/hokkien type of dialect. Wuahahaha funny me.

I’ve added a map in the above post.
It’s located at Jalan Raya Barat (near roundabout). I don’t have the lot number though.
