Chester Has Malassezia (Yeast) Infections

We went to the pet clinic on Saturday. We didn’t go to the new clinic as the vet was having a 2 hours lunch break (2pm-4pm). DUH!! I don’t want to wait and postpone this any longer so I brought him to his old vet. The one where Chester had his hematoma surgery done. He still remembers his ‘nightmare’ experience because we had a hard time pulling & carrying him to the surgery table!

The vet diagnosed his condition as Malassezia or yeast infections. Malassezia is not due to food or weather conditions. It’s due to weak immune system. As dogs get older, their immune system will get weaker. Therefore we must provide them vitamins to strengthen their immune system. Right now Chester is on 2 weeks medicine & vitamins.

Medicine & vitamins to be consumed & appllied at the infected areas.

Sebazole wash which according to the vet is better performing than Malaseb for malassezia dermatitis.

Consultation, medicine/vitamins & medicated shampoo = RM85.

You know what? I won’t be going to this vet. Oh no no no. I forgot how they treat terrified dogs. My dear Chester was so terrified that he refused to budge from the clinic door. And what they did was to use the choke collar method to pull him. πŸ™

This is one of many yeast infected areas on my poor golden. The armpit.

We’ll see how it goes from here. I’ve bought a big bottle of vitamin for him… to be consumed after he finishes the medicine/vitamins so that I can see the effectiveness.

And this is the common problem for many golden retrievers… ‘fish scales like’ at the elbows.

I forgot to ask the vet what this condition is called but she said we can apply Vaseline to soften it.

So far I haven’t seen any improvements (1 days plus) on his skin.

p/s: Chester is 5 years old going on 6 next month. He should be about 35 years in human age.

The first thing that caught my attention was the price. So cheap!!! Ranger was on antibiotics and predisolone (can’t remember how to spell it). I thought the dry callus on their elbows are common amongst dogs. No? Coz all three of mine have them.

Fufu, those street dogs very kesian lo.

Annant, not high maintenance la, like people dogs also will get sick ma.

Amber-Mae, yeah hopefully his skin will be back to normal in no time.

Dawn, cheap? for us here expensive la. Haha Oh so that’s dry callus. Ya it’s common but it irks me. Chester likes to lick it. Geram.

You know why i said it’s cheap, coz each time I send one of the boys to the vet (Ranger as an example for his allergies and yeast infections) the bill will come up to $100+ including tax and biohazard waste management. Took cooper in for his fall allergies the bill was touching $100.

Gosh! Last week you were sick and now your Chester’s turn! Hope both of you could recover as soon as possible and get back to work… you are to shoot and Chester to pose… :dancing:

Dawn, wuah wuahhhh yours more expensive haha. If I minus the Sebazole shampoo price, the vet fee is less than RM50. πŸ˜€

Tekkaus, dermatitis punya lo. He has that since early this year actually. Just that now it’s getting worse.

Cecil Lee, hahaha I got the new lens liao. It’s AMAZING! πŸ™‚

Hmm… If possible, bring him to St. Angel Clinic in Puchong. A very good clinic. I have yet to bring Dom Dom there as I am applying some sort of anti fungal powder.

Dom Dom had this before and vet prescribed antibiotic and some cream to apply. I don’t think it is from the immune system. Basically GR is not suitable to live in Malaysia due to our weather, hot and damp. And bacteria and yeast thrive in damp weather…

Keeyit, today day 3 I still don’t see any improvements. Hai

Dom Dom’s dad, Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll see how it goes with this current one. If no good I’ll try another vet. I suspected the weather and humidity… asked the lady vet but she said nope. Funny. I know a breeder who purposely installed few units of air-cond at his GRs’ kennels. Hehe
