Dog Food Dilemma

Chester was doing fine with Canine Caviar since May this year however the latest two bags of the 27lbs Canine Caviar kibbles from them smell funny when I unsealed the bag at home. The smell got worst as the days goes by. I threw the first bag when there’s 1/4 left. For the second bag, I discovered bugs in the bags when there’s 1/4 left. You know those bugs (called grain beetle or weevils) that infested your spices and rice? Ya that kind.

The bugs discovery was made when I placed the bag upside down. I was just changing the direction of the bag. Who knows I would make such finding. Horror! This means Chester’s been eating bug infested kibbles. Argggh!!! The distributor agreed and have already given me replacement. This happened a week ago.

Left: Canine Caviar replacement
Right: Chester’s new dog food which has higher protein %

While waiting for the replacement, I start feeding him Fish4Dogs which cost RM330 at 12kg (pokai). It was said to be far more superior than Canine Caviar. Well, I don’t think so. Chester’s stools got larger and a bit smellier. And I can see that he’s less active now.

Now problem start to arise on the 3rd day I fed Chester Fish4Dogs. Chester vomited 11 hours after his breakfast (right before dinner time). Then all’s good until 5 days later which he vomited again. Then 3 days later again another vomit. Because he seems fine to me, I didn’t bring him to clinic.
Update: A week past, no vomit. Yay!

I’m speculating his vomit is due to either one of the 3 reasons below:
1. Infection from the bug-infested kibbles.
2. Allergy to ingredient in new food.
3. Hungry because his vomit is yellow (means vomit on empty stomach if what I read is correct) and he’s always hungry. Haha

So now I’m just observing him, I’ll bring him to the doc straight away if he vomits again or become ill. I don’t know whether to continue feeding him the new dog food or feed him the replaced Canine Caviar. Dilemma…

Chester, how now brown cow? Feed you which one leh?
Tsk, picture from Samsung Galaxy S3 is so yucky. They’re low saturated.

Do you put the canine caviar kibbles in the fridge? Maybe that would help prevent the bugs from appearing? Wah! So expensive! No wonder it’s called caviar! LOL!

They’re biscuits and in very large quantity so don’t think can put in the fridge. The expensive one is Fish4Ddogs and of course Canine Caviar is expensive too (about RM250+).

I found out once imported to Malaysia, these dog food price increase by about RM100. πŸ™

I suppose it was difficult to mixed the old food (CC) with Fish4Dogs which will give him time to get use to it. How is he now?

I’m think of mixing the old and new too. I’ll wait few more days to see if he still vomit. He’s okay now.

Just ate a large piece of plastic bag this morning. Worry.

Ohmygosh I think you’re right. No you’re absolutely 100% right. Why I didn’t think of that? Because Chester never vomit when I introduce new food to him. The most he’ll do is have diarrhea. This time he didn’t have diarrhea. Thanks lady. At least now I know why. πŸ™‚

Just curious since Chester did better on Canine Caviar, did you go back to your pet store about the 2 bags or contact Canine Caviar?

Hi Anne, the distributor of Canine Caviar in Malaysia agreed to give me replacement for the bag that was infested with insect. I got my replacement already. Have yet to open the new bag though. Still feeding Chester Fish4Dogs. If all’s good I plan to go back to Canine Caviar because I can see such huge change in his day to day activities.

    Hello Chester, you’re so cute.

I used to fee my GR Sophie NutruEdge. Then we swapped to NutriSource as the supplier had run out of NutriEdge.

Now back to NutriEdge & apparently Sophie is allergic to it! She’s sore, and the vet said it’s food allergies, and I feel so kesian looking at her! And she has such a high tolerance for pain, the vet also was amazed, ha ha.

Got some advice and heard that Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison is good for dogs with allergies, so am gonna try that.

Addiction seems good too; for the time being I gave her some of that and it seems to go well.

      Hi Sharmela,

I’ve fed Chester with Natural Balance before but stopped after that because this brand got recalled for some of their products (awhile back). Besides that I don’t see any improvements on him after doing NB.
