Note: An overdue post just for Jemima.
Collecting paper bags doesn’t sound so bizarre actually but if you’ve been collecting ‘em for nearly 2 decades like me and have no idea what to do with ‘em besides keeping ‘em eons to come then it is BIZARRE.
My whole paper bags + plastic bags collection are here. Maybe this picture didn’t do the justice.
I especially love my Mun Loong paper bags. Mun Loong was one of KL’s most prominent department stores in the late 80s to early 90s. Every season, they’ll have different design of paper bags to woo us. And every time, I’d hope my mom will buy a dress from Mun Loong so that I can have their beautiful paper bags.
These are some of my favourite paper bags from Mun Loong.
I review my paper bags collection once every few years. Actually the number of paper bags has remained quite static. I keep some, I throw some and I add some. What to do? I only have one small area in my cupboard to keep them.
Paper bags with Christmas theme from Isetan, Tangs and Yaohan.
So does anyone of you have this same peculiar hobby – collecting paper bags?

Pelf, hahaha no worry there. I’ve got mothballs!
hi! i am also a paperbag collector. it started out when my mum gave all her collection to me for me to continue. i have lost count of the quantity. Maybe i’ll shoot some and posted it here to share.
Hi Reena, thanks for dropping by. Wow so you’re a 2nd generation paperbag collector from your family. Cool.
Yes do share with us your collection. 🙂
Just read about your interesting collection. I too started collecting paper bags in 1976 on a trip to England. The pen pal friend my husband and I were visiting told me she thought paper bags would soon not be made anymore because of the popularity of plastic and we both started collecting any unusual bags. I now have 4 huge boxes of bags. What a silly thing to have. I was going to throw them away one day, or burn them, but was talked out of it. I stopped collecting them years ago!! Yesterday I received a small package from England. My pen pal friend just passed away and her daughter sent me some very interesting bags her mother had saved through the years. I laughed out loud when I saw them and decided to see if there was anyone else out there with this silly collection.
Hi Carol, thanks for sharing your wonderful bittersweet story.
This post is 5 years plus old and I’m very happy to say that this hobby of mine is still going strong. 🙂
Good for you!!! Certainly makes life interesting to have people who do these unusual things.
I even have all my bags sorted according to what kind of store they are from.
Maybe I should paper a room with them so everyone can see them… Well, maybe not~~~~
Thanks for listening to me ramble on!
Carol
I arranged mine according to size. Haha
You’re always welcome. 🙂
Wow it’s great to have found this article. I thought i’m the only weirdo who’d hold my shopping paper bag with care in the way that i’d avoid even a lil fold or crease to the bag for keepsakes! :DDD
Hi Mandy, Hi-5! I used to care about the fold and crease but not anymore. Haha
i was asking my friend what to do with my 3 big cartons of paper bags from more than two decades, and from shops here and overseas. She directed me to your blog site. So, if anyone knows what to do with their collection other than stuffing them into a box or cupboard, please let me know. Too sayang to throw.
Hi Suan, maybe we could open a museum one day. 😉
Oh my. I just fount out I’m not the only weirdo. Gonna move to a condo now. Don’t know what to do with all my paper bags that I have collected for more than 2 decades. Lim’s Suan said. Feel very sayang to throw them away. 🙁
Hi Joanne, If I’m you, I will still keep them.
Wish to. But got no place to store them😞
Hmm… what if you store them on top of cupboard or below the bed?
Hello everyone, glad to see so many ppl with like minds. I won’t call myself a wierdo, so neither should any. We are the few lucky guys who are crazy for an interesting item which others could not even imagine to think about. It’s creativity. It’s like an Art Collection… 🙂
It’s been a decade for me and I have about 2 huge cases of bags. I realised now that I should do something with it and came across this blog while searching for collectors. Sadly, there’s not many around or haven’t discussed the passion. We need to have a platform for us to share our stories. Thumbs up to Amy for the blog.
Hi Musaiyab, it’s nice to find someone sharing the same hobby. Cheers! 🙂
