My First Tooth Extraction Experience

I had my tooth extracted last Friday. It was my first ever experience. *I secretly hope there will be no more but I doubt it. I have 1 more bad tooth, now with filling. Not sure how long that can last. Gulps (forever I hope haha)*

So how do you think it went?

To tell you the truth, I was more nervous on Tuesday (the day I went to see the dentist for the toothache) than on Friday, THE extraction day itself. I must thank these women for sharing their tooth extraction stories with me. So THANK YOU Grandma, Mom, Dawn & Swee San.

On Friday, I arrived at the dentist a couple of minutes before 8.30pm. There was no patient and I was ushered in immediately. I was quite calm. I managed to block my mind off about the extraction the whole day and previous day… kind of. I did think about it but I didn’t make it worse. Wednesday was the hardest. My whole Wednesday was tensed and anxious… like I was floating.

First I tried to con my mind that I’m going to bungee jump instead of ‘cabut gigi’ haha. From there I think how the bungee jump adventure will be once in a lifetime experience! So why fret about it? I tried to get my mind focus on the Now. You know how a worrier mind works? They’ll jump to the past and future… thinking what if this happens, what if that happens, why didn’t I brush my teeth correctly, imagine what if the extraction process gone wrong and so on. So I must say this time I’m quite successful. I managed to get my mind thinking about NOW which is the present. Just do it. Think of it as the adventure of a lifetime. Wohooo!

Ok so back to the dentist. He sedated my upper right gum twice with I guess is anesthetic. Time was 8.30pm. I make sure I check the duration of the extraction so that I can blog about it. Haha The injection is painless. Having your arm injected is more painful. Seriously.

He left me for few minutes for the anesthetic to take effect. Slowly I can feel the numbness at my upper right gum. And then the dentist came back and began the pulling. A nurse held my head and then I ‘uuuhhhhh’. The dentist stopped.

I asked “Okay already?”

“Not yet” said the dentist.

I said “I can still feel some pain”

“Okay I inject another one (third)” said the dentist.

And very quickly began pulling again. And before 3 second past, it was over.

“Okay already?” I asked the second time.

“Yup” said the dentist. He added “You don’t need the 3rd injection actually.”

And he showed me the extracted tooth.

Do you wanna see it? If yes, please scroll down… hehe
If you don’t wanna see it, please also scroll down hahaha

My upper right wisdom tooth. πŸ™‚ Not very clear.
Nearly half the tooth is decayed. Eeeee

There was no pain during the extraction (of course) but I can feel my tooth being pulled as if weeds being pulled from the soil. I didn’t see the tools used by the dentist though as I was spectacle-less. I imagine it would be something like a pliers?

Oh btw the extraction was completed at 8.37pm. Fast right? haha

I walked out of the clinic very proud of myself. πŸ™‚ *pat pat*

The bleeding continued until the very next afternoon. No serious bleeding. Even after the anesthetic has worn off, I didn’t feel any pain from the now ‘bald’ gum. The only pain is the gum area that was pricked by the needle. 2 days after the extraction, my gum developed a white sore… at the area the needle being pricked (I guess). Is this normal?

Today 4 days later, I still chew on the left side. The white sore is still there.

So ahem Xin, time to go to the dentist?

p/s: I’m not that brave actually. I had my mom talking to me the whole of the extraction process. Soothing mother’s voice. Haha

Kitkat, I have to pull it. I don’t want to suffer and eat only at 1 side of the mouth. Can’t enjoy food with one side. Food taste doesn’t the same eating at one side only. Really.

Benghui, it’s all in the head only.

Dawn, thanks to you. Hehe Shiny pliers? oh thank god I didn’t have to see it. Haha

Tekkaus, I didn’t brush the innermost teeth properly. I didn’t know there are teeth on both side of the upper mouth (paling dalam one)… didn’t explore with my hand… that’s the only way to find out ma.

Xin, injection part no pain wor. Extract the tooth root from underneath the gum is what I wanted to avoid. That’s why I had it now… before the whole tooth are rotten.

    Bryan, yours… scary experience?

your first tooth extraction is the wisdom tooth!! I think I will still freak out if u ask me to go for extraction even after I’ve done it 5 times T___T

  • Reply Che-Cheh December 5, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Swee, yeah wisdom tooth… a useless one as said by the doctor because this tooth serve no purpose at all. I will still freak out if I were to go for my second one. It’s all in the head ya. Haha

-Agreed with u- like weeds being pulled from the soil….still remember ….of course there was no pain but for me, after the extraction, i felt my mouth “ternganga” for hours, seems like my jaw got loose…huhuh….

  • Reply Che-Cheh December 17, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Mazu, haha I didn’t ternganga. Every time I think about the ‘weed pulling’ thing… geli.
