Butterfly Lovers – The Musical

Out of the blue my sister invited me and mom to Butterfly Lovers Musical. Since it was complimentary (sis sponsored haha) I said yes lo. For those who grew up in Chinese household, I’m sure you’ve heard and may even seen movies/dramas of the story Zhu Ying Tai and Liang Shan Bo. That’s Butterfly Lovers Musical. It’s actually my mom’s and grandma’s favorite.

We went to the Butterfly Lovers Musical yesterdays (Saturday) for the 3pm show at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre KLPAC).

It was my first time at KLPAC and I was impressed with the place.

In this building is Pentas 1 where the musical is held.

Outfit for Butterfly Lovers Musical
My outfit for the Butterfly Lovers Musical. I start to embrace dress this year. Always a tomboy. Haha

During the 15 minutes intermission, took a quick trip to the loo and we still have time for the view. Yes it was raining.

I like the performance of the first half. It was quite interesting and the singing were great. After the intermission, I started to feel sleepy. Still I look forward to the ending. I wondered how they’re going to play it out. In my opinion the ending were week. I shuddered! Haha During the thunderstorms and rain scene, I really could hear the rain outside… giving an ‘original’ sound effect to the musical!

The musical is in Mandarin with English translation available in an electronic board above the stage. The narration on the other hand is done in English which I find it weird. English-Mandarin-English-Mandarin. I would have stick to one.

Main Cast of Butterfly Lovers Musical
The main cast: Tan Soo Suan as Zhu Ying Tai and Liow Jun Yi as Liang Shan Bo. That’s not us in hearts. I just ‘tumpang’ to take photo of the cast.

I find the vocal of Tan Soo Suan really nice but the most surprising thing is Janet Lee who played Zhu Ying Tai’s personal maid. She has even stronger and beautiful vocal.

Overall we (3 of us) rate Butterfly Lovers an average 6.1 out of 10. Personally I gave this musical 5 out of 10 because I don’t feel any emotional attachment. It didn’t captured me.

I think this musical will appeal to both young and old. We were told the tickets are almost sold out for the remaining shows. So book fast if you’re interested to see the play. I think my grandma would have liked it.
