Joseon Gunman or Joseon Chongjabi 조선 총잡이 is the kind of drama anyone would love. Masked, double identity hero… You get what I mean? I came into this drama with great interest and it surely did not disappoint so far (I’m at episode 10 as I’m writing this). Because I was so hooked with this drama, I marathoned it until the latest episode as shown in Korea.
Updates: I’ve completed Joseon Gunman finally. Overall it was an okay drama. I like it but not to the point of loving it. I did enjoyed it though. My favorite episodes are the first four epis mostly because I love how vibrant and innocent Yun Gang and Soo In are plus I love Yun Gang’s garb here. Haha 🙂 Disliked the middle episodes. The ending was really pack but came through beautifully. Do give Joseon Gunman a go only if you’re Joon Gi fans. Haha
What this drama is about…
Synopsis from KBS World:
In the time of enlightenment, a battle between a sword and a gun has started.
Based in the time of enlightenment of 19th-century Joseon, “Gunman in Joseon” tells the story of Joseon’s last swordsman named Park Yun Gang who grabs a gun ditching his sword and grows to become the era’s hero.
It’s interesting to see how the lives of people changes as the era of gun came into play over sword. I find this drama quite wonderfully written. The cinematography was excellent and the hanboks are so pretty. The man who plays the hero Park Yun Gang is Lee Joon Gi. He’s such an exceptional actor. Not only is his acting wonderful, his swift action-packed moves need to be praised as well. I’ve never seen any actors that got the moves like him. One thing you gotta know is that he’s a martial arts expert trained in Taekwondo, Hapkido and Taekkyeon.
Prior to this drama I’ve only heard of the name Lee Joon Gi but has never seen him acted before. He almost has his hand on Faith (one of my fav K. drama of all time) but had to let go for military sake. I’m glad I have the opportunity to see his acting here. I’m basically drawn to him and his Joseon speech. LOL You can say that he’s not the best-looking actors out there but somehow something just draw me into him. He’s not exactly charismatic or cute either. All I can say that, that’s the Joon Gi effect. Haha
As for Nam Sang Mi who plays Jeong Soo In (lead actress), I’ve never heard about her before and I like her here. Together her and Joon Gi’s romancing period in the first 4 episodes of this drama is the sweetest thing. But then unfortunately, the romance kinda sizzle off after that. I gotta blame her less active acting after episode 4 due to the writing. Come on writer-nim you can do so much more with Soo In’s character.
This is actually Lee Joon Gi and Nam Sang Mi second collaborative. They have acted together also as a couple 7 years ago in Time Between Dog And Wolf.

Have you heard Yun Gang calling Soo In as nangja 낭자 plenty of times? It’s nangja and NOT namja or nanja. It actually means my lady, a maiden, a girl, young woman. See here.
Park Yun Gang’s double identity as Hanjo. This is my least favorite look of him. I like him in hanbok and mask hero more.
Park Yun Gang in his ninja suit looking so very cool.
Lee Joon Gi as the masked ninja-like hero.
I also need to praise Yu Oh Seong especially (best K.drama villian for 2014), Jeon Hye Bin and Han Joo Wan which plays second fiddles to the main actors. Their acting are also well done.
As for OST, I like the one by Ali called 돌틈꽃 Flower In The Rock/Flower Through The Rock and Do You Know My Heart by Ivy. I also like all the instrumental pieces. 🙂
