I have no more reason to postpone making tiramisu because the Savoiardi (Lady fingers) packet I bought long time ago is expiring end of this month. Hehe
So over the weekend, I made my first tiramisu following the recipe from the Savoiardi packet itself.
I wouldn’t recommend this recipe to anyone. I have to be very generous when building my Tiramisu – read: not enough cream.
Another reason why I’ve been putting tiramsiu on hold is because of the exorbitant price of mascarpone cheese.
At RM19.90 per tub I think I would just buy ready-made tiramisu from cafes. But of course the joy of whipping one myself is enough to cover the ‘stingy’ side of me. Supermarket price is over RM20++. I bought mine at baking supplies shop.
I can tell you it’s not gonna be ‘authentic’ tiramisu even before I begin. Because I have no espresso (strong coffee)!!! I use normal coffee powder. Kekeke
Psst… can someone tell me where to buy espresso powder?
Anyway I have a good time building my tiramisu.
Start with spreading a layer of cream (consist of mascropone+egg white+egg yolk+sugar) in a beautiful plate.
Soak the lady fingers very quickly into espresso+kahlua. Arrange nicely.
Continue building your tiramisu pyramid. Haha
Higher! higher!
This is the highest I can go. I have enough cream left to cover the top. Oh gosh the side look sloppy.
Chill in the fridge for few hours.
This is the final deal…
Chocolate shavings was too little. I have no more patience. I want to try now! Haha
The taste was not bad actually except as I mentioned earlier, no coffee taste BUT still it has that distinct tiramisu smell. And I find the lady fingers too soggy. Is it suppose to be like that?
Overall I would deem this as failed! What ya know? I still have 1/2 packet of lady fingers left and 10 more days to go. Another tiramisu?
Surprisingly, the plate was wiped clean in just 2 seatings. Yes, perhaps another tiramisu. 🙂 Hmm if only I know where to get the espresso powder and Italian Vermouth (worst case use kahlua).
Btw dear readers, do you know I have a new blog? It’s a food blog called Messy Witchen. I figured it’s easier to blog what I cook, bake & eat rather than document recipes in a spreadsheet. Remember to visit me there too ya for latest recipe & makan makan place. 😉
You must be wondering why I didn’t put this post in Messy Witchen? Well, because this is a failed attempt. Malu lar. Hahaha
p/s: Photos were taken in fading evening lights, RAW mode. After some tweaking in Lightroom and Photoshop, this is what you get. Not bad huh?

It’s a good first attempt! There’s always a first time for everything – my motto. Haha!
I feel like having a tiramisu cake now!
Hey not bad looking at all. Espresso powder I suppose you could go into a Starbucks and ask if you can buy a 1/2 lb espresso, have them ground them super fine. The Starbucks or Caribou does it for me here.
Looks good and yummy. I love creamy food!
Keeyit, hehe ya ya. Jia you. 😀
Foongpc, ya and also never try never know ya. Go have one. 🙂
Dawn, I got think of getting from Starbucks…but $$ kaching hahaha I wonder supermarket ada espresso poweder ka. But then need the espresso maker?
Peteformation, oh then tiramisu is ideal for you.
looks nice leh!!!! will we ever get the chance to taste it?
it was the first time. try again. it will come out better as we all learn from the mistakes we make
Xin, haha no lo. Sudah sapu.
Bengbeng, yeah learn from mistakes. 🙂
I don’t know about supermarkets, but here supermarket sell their store brand or some cheaper espresso beans. We self-serve, ground them to our needs and we use a french-press to make espresso – espresso maker $$$, but my hubby use the coffee maker we have at home. Confectoinary shops should sell them, no?
2nd time, u keep some for me ok.
Dawn, I remember browsing through the hypermarket aisles but were unable to find. Maybe I need to go to supermarket like Cold Storage. Ohh now I remember my dad has the french-press thingy. But not sure where he puts it. Need to find quickly coz time is running out! haha and of course the espresso powder. Worst case just buy from Starbucks.
Neo, if sedap I will sapu all wor.
go to ampang grocer or cold storage in great eastern mall… they have most ingredients…
I misread tiramisu for tsunami  Anyway, looks delicious!
Lex, yeah maybe I’ll go to Cold Storage but by then the lady fingers already due. (still can eat kua)
Jam, haha
yeah, very cool photos. one advantage of shooting in RAW is the more control over the lighting, shades, shadows n such.
but lazy to do the post-processing part. 🙂
try again, and hope to see your creation over at Messy Witchen.
J2Kfm, thanks. 🙂 Most of the time I’m lazy. Hahaha First I need to get my tooth fix.
Awhh..
I suck at baking, so erm.. Try again?
But hey, love those Chinese cookies thingy on your sidebar.
Believe it or not, I havn’t eaten those in a year already. =(
Mizz Sharon, Hi  yes I will try again. You can make those cookies come this CNY. 🙂 You’re coming back to Malaysia right?
Can you tell me where I can get the Savoiardi cookies? I’ve been searching for them for a long time…
I got them from Bagus. I’ve seen them at other baking supplies shop as well. Not really difficult to find them these days.
