My New DSLR Camera!

Yo! yo! Yo! I’ve jumped into the DSLR camera bandwagon. Been calling myself a Nikonian for the past 2 days.

Why I buy a DSLR camera instead of a PnS camera:
1. Judging that I have to fork out more than RM1k to buy a decent PnS Lumix. I don’t know why but I like PnS Lumix very much.
2. I’ll be getting the same function & some little bit more in a new PnS camera. Not stimulating lo.
3. Camera weight is no longer an issue.
4. My heart kept urging me to buy DSLR.

Why Nikon and not Canon or other brands? Somehow I dislike Canon. When choosing a gadget like camera, handphone or computer, I first choose the brand that I like and then narrow it down to the model I like.

Which DSLR did I buy? Nah not D90 (beyond budget) and not D60 either. Because I want more room to expand, I choose Nikon D80 (a between entry-level and semi-professional level camera).

Nikon D80 was released about 2 1/2 years ago (9th Aug 2006 to be precised). In fact this model has been discontinued few months ago in Malaysia. Only some shops still carry this model. Some may ask why buy a discon camera. For me because D80 fits my hand like a glove. The feeling is great when holding D80. And there are some other strong reason why I fancy D80 over D60 like D80 has 11 focus area as opposed to 3 for D60, I’ll need to fork out maybe another RM1k within a year to buy a new lens if I choose D60… which comes to the same price as D80 eventually. D60 is about RM1k cheaper than D80. But because D80 kit lens is perfect for me (don’t have to shelf extra money right now for another lens)… so D80 it is!

Unlike the time I was hunting for a PnS camera (visited 13 shops in 2 days + 6 phone calls hahahaha), it was a smooth flow with this DSLR. I called up a few shops (maybe 8-10 shops hehe) and I bought the camera at the first shop I visited. I actually plan to visit 2 shops as the latter one is giving me good price & more free gifts. But I managed to bargain my way into a cheaper deal in this first shop. Less free gifts but oklah.

I bought my DSLR at Foto Selangor, Pertama Complex (get to know this shop from Cecil). I get free bag and 2GB SDHC card only!?! Have to fork out additional RM300 (after discount) for UV protection filter (chapulong brand also so expensive), cleaning tools, 1 extra battery (3rd party) and upgrade to 4GB.

The camera+kit lens… ahem ahem… I got it for RM2800. I’m not sure if it’s a good deal or not. But the opening price they gave me was over RM3500 (CRAZY!!!). Maybe they think I didn’t know the current selling price. The 2nd shop that I plan to go initially quoted me RM2900 (by phone) come with bag, filter, 4GB and cleaning tools.

One thing good about Foto Selangor is that they don’t extra charge you for using credit card. The 2nd shop does. So in a way… I guess oklah the deal.

What say you?

Fiddling with my new DSLR camera. At 1 point I was really lost. Not sure which setting is good for beginner. Hence most of the photos are blurry & not vivid. I think this photo is not bad. My hand control is no good. I’m using Programmed auto (P) and continuous shot currently.

Trying out a close-up shot. Boleh tahan la.

p/s: I’m downloading Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2. Is this the software to view RAW file (besides JPEG) & to edit them? Also how to read EXIF information in the computer ar? What are the computer software you use for viewing, managing, editing, etc your DSLR photos? TEACH ME!!! Hehe Plus any good advice for a D80 / Nikonian beginner? Tsk tsk…

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to our not-so-exclusive world.

Yes, Lightroom is the program. As for how to read the ExIF, if you are using Vista, it’s displayed underneath. Else, right click and go to properties, the ExIF are there.

Nikon has a colour mode called “vivid”. Choose it and you get instant “woah” colours. P mode is a good start as well. Do read up on aperture priority and shutter priority, by understanding that two, you are already halfway through using your camera.

RM2,800 is quite a good bargain.

Hey,.. now you can enter the KL Photoawards, hurry deadline 1 March!

Annant, hmm not sure I’m brave enough to bring out this camera in the public.  Very seldom see girls with dslr le.

Mo-C, u kena dtg my rumah la. I buka kedai gambar instant pasport photo. Haha

Jason, why say not-so-exclusive world? I can see the exif data in posted image. I mean how to see ExIF data in a photo after you’ve double click the picture in your pc? eh… I know already. For Nikon can use ViewNX. Yes I already read about aperture priority & shutter priority. Can’t wait to use these 2 modes but at the meantime I’ll use P first. Want to learn the basic first. I admit the f stops, mm thing haha is very confusing.

Klpa, thanks I checked it out. Seems cool. πŸ˜€

Take more picture of Chester ya.

Because today every Ah Chong, Ali and Muthu has a dSLR. It’s too common already. No other words except by reading the details at the bottom bar or by right clicking properties. MM is the width of the picture, there’s nothing to know/understand about. F- is what you need to understand.

Does your kit lense come with vibration reduction function? If yes then you need to switch it on for better and sharper low light photo….

    D80?? Why not D90?? πŸ™‚

anyway, welcome to the DSLR world!!

  • Reply Che-Cheh February 18, 2009 at 7:18 am

Amber-Mae, your mommy took very beautiful photos of 3 of you. I’m sure when she has her first DSLR, it’ll be even great. πŸ˜€

Dawn, woahhhh… sure sure that is if I master it la.

Cecil Lee, nope. So maybe that’s why it’s a little difficult to shoot inside the house. Mostly blurry in low light. Gonna try using tripod.

Vialentino, thanks. I hope you get yours soon. πŸ˜€

    iWalk, thank you. πŸ™‚

Angie Tan, no budget for D90.

I plan my next dslr adventure at Manchester United vs Malaysia XI. Have you been to any of MU exhibition matches in Malaysia? Do you know how much roughly is a ticket? Please let me know by noon cause AirAsia has 20% discounts on air ticket today. Please… :kowtow: and thanks!

  • Reply jam February 19, 2009 at 8:35 am

Ya, dropping a comment in my blog will do!

  • Reply Che-Cheh February 19, 2009 at 9:15 am

Jam, ooh cool! I’ve not been to ManUtd exhibition match in Malaysia. I’ve been to Chelsea & Newcastle… ticket price if not mistaken is less than RM50/RM100 for ‘far away seats’. Expensive seat will be more than RM100. But this is long time ago. Can’t really remember. I’m just taking a guess. Of course ManUtd one will be much more expensive.

Your blog load later than mine…so I answer here.

Wuching, I also not very sure man! Especially low light condition… I fail!
