Rosemary & Sweet Basil Not Looking Good

Hmmm my rosemary and sweet basil plants which I bought from Sungai Buloh are not looking great. It’s not even a month yet! Hahaha Both plants are in the shade with morning sunlight. When they started to show sign of sickness, I placed them outside for more sunlight. But then they show more wilting sign and I placed them back in the shade.

This is the sweet basil plant about a month ago.
Healthy looking!

This is taken few days back. Doomsday!
I’m guessing yellow leaves is over-watering? But I only water once a day.
Also I noticed old leaves is ‘way’ bigger than new leaves. Not enough fertilizer?

Now: Sick rosemary πŸ™
It actually started with browning at leaves edge. So I re-potted it and place ’em further apart. Now, the leaves near the soil is yellowing (over-watering?). Some of the top leaves will fall off if I touch ’em (too dry?). I’m so clueless… over water or less water? *scratch head.

Appreciate any feedback (if you have experience with rosemary and basil)

p/s: I propagate a basil stalk to another pot. Hope it will grow roots and survive.

From,
A helpless and hopeless gardener.

maybe you don’t have green fingers? :S

i think they are lack of nutrient. try some organic fertilizer, it might help. πŸ™‚

I used to think I don’t have talent for gardening but then I managed to grow some other flowering plants. Not bad la. Even my Roselle plants are growing quite well. Only I don’t have magic fingers for herb plants. Argghhhh!

I fed them fertilizer few days ago. πŸ™‚

When I was doing lots of planting years ago, the garden center lady told me rosemary is drought resistant, so water it when it starts to wilt, plus needs good drainage. I was told the plant flourish better if you prune it and need lots of sun and will not do well in shade.

Basil if I remember needs lots of water and sunlight but overwatering will cause root rot. Cant remember now about basil coz mine died within 2 weeks I brought home. Rosemary survive 3 years till we moved here.

Ahh ic. I’ll bring the rosemary back to full sunlight.
I think the basil lower stalk is rotting. Cham loo.

      Thanks!

If the basil has root rot, repot it lah and try to save the good ones. See if that works.

Hmm… not much advice except to eat as much as you can before they’re gone!

That’s exactly what my mom said too! Hehe

The garden lady told me to water every 2 days and baja once every two weeks. Mine is about the same as your too. Rosemary looks like gonna die anytime soon, but the basil still going strong. Let see in a few weeks time.

Ah btw, do you know how to plant a mint? I bought twice and they are dead in a week. How come ah?

Hi Aisyah, I’ve transferred the rosemary outside since yesterday (follow Dawn’s advice). Let’s see how it goes. Btw for your newly sprout basil leaves, is it as big as those old leaves? coz mine all kecik-kecik.

Never tried planting mint. I always feel mint is a very fragile herb coz they wilt very fast – those bought from market/supermarket for cooking.

Actually, your plants look ok loh. Better than mine. My rosemary mati terus. I definitely do not have green fingers at all!

Hi Ling, half of my rosemary is dying while the other half is growing. I think this is my 3rd or 4th trial growing rosemary. Do not give up. πŸ™‚

Hi Hornbill, your basil is very healthy looking. I think I managed to rescued mine but can’t say the same for the rosemary. Will post latest herbs photos later.

Just stumbled onto your blog while Google-ing for Klang Valley nurseries.

    That recently happened to my basil – and I noticed there were some insects feeding off it (black, under the leaves);
so I blasted them with some pesticide, and added some fungicide for good measure (you never know!), and they are quite alright now.
My basil are in full sun.

Rosemary needs full sun, and is prone to root rot — so mine is watered every 2 days with good drainage.

Hi Margaret, good to know your basil is in good condition. Mine is still surviving but not great. I placed both basil and rosemary in partial sun.
