Easy DIY Eco-Enzyme At Home

What is eco-enzyme? Eco-enzyme is a multipurpose fermented solution by fermenting kitchen scraps with brown sugar and water. Eco-enzyme is also known as garbage enzyme and cleaning enzyme. It has many applications such as multi-purpose household cleaner (from cleaning your clothes to the toilet bowl!), plant fertilizer, pond purifier and many more. With the idea of turning kitchen scraps into useful eco-enzyme and saving money at the same time, I was sold!

After procrastinating for a long time, I finally started the project in 2019 but failed very early on. The Mandarin orange peels that I was collecting during Chinese New Year (CNY) became moldy in room temperature after a few weeks. The right way is to freeze the peels until you’re ready to start the fermenting.

DIY Bone, Prawn & Fish Meal Blend Fertilizer

In December last year, I experimented with making homemade bone meal fertilizer. Today, I’m going to share with you the methods to make bone, prawn (shrimp) and fish meal blend fertilizer. If you have several types of bones and shells, you can make them together and form a blend like what I did. Of course, you can also make them individually. The methods are the same.

Bone Meal Experiment

I once buried the leftover bones from bone broth making into my garden. I had attempted at making my own bone meal but failed because the pork bones were just too tough and strong. I never find out what happened to the buried bones, but I never saw them again despite digging up the area for planting after a couple of months later. So, I guess they’ve composted.

Bone meal is the dried and ground powder form of animal bones. It contains a good amount of phosphorus and calcium and is a wonderful fertilizer for the plants.

Vitamins For My Plants

What do you feed your plants? Besides sunshine, water, air and love that is. 🌞πŸ₯€πŸŒ¬οΈπŸ’•

I used to feed my plants with store-bought fertilizers but not anymore. FYI, the ones I used were organic and non-organic kinds. I always find store-bought fertilizers come with an extremely strong chemical smell. So it makes me wonder whether I should keep using these chemical-laden fertilizers? My instinct said no. And so, I ditched the store-bought fertilizers including store-bought animal’s manure (the manure smells like manure though) 2 years+ ago. From then on I make my own vitamins to supplement my plants. I prefer to call it vitamins instead of fertilizers though.
