Hong Kong Day 4 & 5: Crossing Victoria Harbor, Happy Valley Racecourse & Goodbye

Hong Kong Day 1: HKIA, First Airbnb & Duk Ling
Hong Kong Day 2: Victoria Peak Garden, Shopping & Sai Ying Pun
Hong Kong Day 3: Prizemart, Liu Ma Kee, Shanghai Street & Best Mart 360

Beware: a very long post!

Woke up at 7am+ on day 4. After dilly-dally, we went out at 10am+ for brunch at a dai pai dong in Tai Hang, Hong Kong Island.

To get to Tai Hang, we need to cross Victoria Harbor either by MTR or ferry (of course you can cross by car, bus or taxi too). Taking the MTR will save time. However we prefer taking the Star Ferry because it’s always an exceptional experience. I’ve rode the ferry before in 2011 that was going to Central. This time, we’re going to Wan Chai area via the Wan Chai ferry route.

At Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier To Wan Chai @ Hong Kong
At Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier to Wan Chai. We paid the fare with Octopus card.

Hong Kong Day 1: HKIA, First Airbnb & Duk Ling

Cheong hei (long-winded) travel post as usual. Lots of $aver tips below!

Prologue

I didn’t go on a vacation last year. So, this year I make sure to get at least one out of it. I have three choices when it comes to my next holiday destination. Hong Kong was one of it. I was almost in a position of doing my first ever solo backpacking trip, so I choose Hong Kong since I’ve been there twice before, and I think it’s kinda okay for solo woman traveller. But then I got myself a travel partner – my sis! So this became our 4th overseas siblings-only vacation.

My previous Hong Kong trip was 7 years ago (2011) and since then I have been looking forward to my next trip so that I can stuff myself silly with more yummy food. So, for this 5 days and 4 nights (22nd April to 26th April 2018) trip, it’s all about FOOD, FOOD, FOOD! Funnily, it wasn’t food that blows me away, but new experiences. After this latest trip, my love for Hong Kong declined a lot!!! Wanna know why? Then you gotta follow my 2018 Hong Kong travelogue.

AirAsia
In order to travel budget, we choose AirAsia. I’m still not fond of the super loooooong walk to the boarding gate. On the positive side, it’s good exercise! Two and half years ago, I mentioned in my Taiwan post that there is only one water dispenser throughout the length of the departure hall (at P10) of KLIA2. This time, they have installed one more at P3. Now, this is better.

Hong Kong Day 5 & 6: YMCA of HK, Symphony of Lights, Dessert Attack, Goodbye Hong Kong

Check these out (if you haven’t) before reading this last post of my Hong Kong 2011 trip:
Hong Kong Day 1: Airport Express, Thematic Lantern Exhibition & Heritage 1881
Hong Kong Day 2: Star Ferry, Man Mo Temple & Gage Street Market
Hong Kong Day 3: Ocean Park
Hong Kong Day 4: Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Citigate Outlets at Lantau Island & Esprit Outlet

If you noticed, I’ve yet to review our lodging of 5 nights at YMCA of Hong Kong. Read on then.

I wanted to stay at YMCA of Hong Kong (also dubbed The Salisbury) for the longest time. Tried to book ‘the cheapest dormitory room’ before my first trip here but it was fully booked. Tried to book it for my 2nd visit… still no luck. Finally I decided to book the ‘most expensive room’ in YMCA. The Salisbury is not the usual kind of YMCA accommodation (read: shabby). This is one of the very best lodging you can find in Hong Kong.

Let me give you a tour of our room before I tell you what I think of this place and their services.

Upon entering Harbour View Suite,

A sofa bed (not comfortable at all!), arm chair and desk.

A Ride On Hong Kong Star Ferry – How To & Tips

Star Ferry is the main ferry operator in Hong Kong that carry locals and tourists across Victoria Harbour between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

Like eating dim sum, I missed riding the Star Ferry in my 1st visit there. So I make sure one of my top priority for my 2nd visit would be riding the 100-year old Hong Kong Star Ferry. 🙂

The National Geographic Traveler named the ferry crossing as one of the ‘Must-Do’s’ in its ‘Place of a Lifetime’ series which featured 50 cities. The ferry ride is also well known as one of the world’s best value-for-money sightseeing trips. ~source from Star Ferry site

So how was the ride? It was lovely, exciting and pleasant! One ride is too short though! Everyone should ride the Hong Kong Star Ferry at least once in their visit there. But I bet ya you would like to ride the Star Ferry many times after that.

Let me share with you now my experience riding on the Star Ferry including how to and tips.

I stayed in Kowloon side at YMCA, Tsim Sha Tsui. So it’s just a short walk to Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier.
