Chester

Chester on Canine Caviar

After the Innova pet food recall in early May this year, I searched high and low for a brand new dog food for Chester. One criteria for the dog food is it must have low protein so that it will not burden his kidney since he’s such a couch potato and two, dog food that’s age-suitable for my ah pek dog (read: senior). In Malaysia, Klang Valley to be precised, no matter where I go ask for the senior pet food, all I get from pet shops are ‘We don’t carry senior dog food’ and ‘Just take the adult dog food, they are suitable for senior too’. If you really understand dog food, you’ll know that that’s not true.

Thanks to my sis’ friend recommendation I finally found a better dog food for my golden. Chester has been on Canine Cavaiar for a month plus now and I can see drastic changes on him. What first attracted me to Canine Caviar is that they are the only alkaline-based dog food in America. If you don’t know what alkaline-based food is, well cancer thrive on acid-based food like meats. Therefore eating alkaline food can reduce cancer risk. Alkaline food are like vegetables, fruits, nuts, tofu, etc. I, myself have been trying to eat more alkaline-based food.

This is what I’ve been feeding Chester, Canine Caviar: Special Needs. It’s a special formula for senior or overweight dog.

I bought the largest pack which weighted at 27lbs/12.27kg. This premium holistic dog food is around RM50 more expensive than Innova at RM256.90. Some shops give 10% off. So it’s RM231.20.

The kibbles are way smaller than what Chester usually had. Thankfully my cheeky dog doesn’t swallow ’em whole. He’ll take at least 2 bites first. Good boy Chester!

The first thing that I noticed about Chester once he’s fully on Canine Caviar is that his poo doesn’t smell (if I have to put it boldly). Oh yes I’m SERIOUS!!! Ok nothing’s perfect so I would say his poo smell only 5% of poo. This change is enough to garner me as a lifelong fan. Seriously I’ve never heard of poo that doesn’t smell. Even my own poo smell so horrid (hahaha).

You must be wondering why I know so much about my dog’s poo’s smell? Because I pick up after my dog. πŸ™‚ You see, my dog does his business on newspaper in the porch, then I wrap it up and throw in a plastic bag. Sometimes he’ll do his business outside but I’m always paper-ready! So nowadays I no longer need to block my nose while wrapping his poo up. LOL I also noticed his poos are smaller in size. That means the nutrition and vitamins are absorbed into his body. Yay!!!

Then I realized Chester is thinner now. Our recent trip to the vet’s weighting scale proved it. Chester weights about 28kg+. Previously he’s 30kg. Thing is I feed him exactly 2 cups per day, same ratio when he’s on Innova only that this kibbles is smaller in size. Finally I got a praise from the vet. Haha So why am I happy that he’s thinner now? Because that’s the appropriate weight for senior dog. We don’t want to put force on their legs.

Next I realized Chester is fitter, livelier and more active like in his puppyhood time. My dog who’s getting old has a little bit of problem getting up previously, but not anymore. I’m happy as a bee! And he’s now known as a busybody dog. He follows us around more, barks more (LOL) and ask for treats more. About asking for treats, I did a test run by feeding him more kibbles but he couldn’t finish the kibbles so I know he’s not hungry. He’s just dying for treats!

Of course it’s common sense that if you feed your dog good food, his fur will be in great condition too. I didn’t notice any changes as his fur has always been soft to the touch. Hehe But I do notice that he sheds lesser now. I’m not sure whether it’s the season or the food.

Lastly, Chester private areas has always been infected with yeast, though I tried my best to bath him with Malaseb. I was hoping to see some change with this new food but the condition remain the same.

All in all, I’m super happy to have found this pet food for my dog and I wish I have known about it earlier. As far as what I read, the distributor only brought this pet food to Malaysia only recently (2012 if I’m not mistaken).

To all pet lovers in the world, I hope you could try this pet food.

To the distributor of Canine Caviar in Malaysia, please bring in Canine Caviar treats. My dog wants to try ’em!!!
